I fully expected to enjoy this book as the subject matter is of great interest to me. But the translation is simply abominable. Perhaps the original text is as well; regardless, the dreadful writing, hideous inaccuracies (pg. 95 “More than FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND people had lost their lives...” referring to and wildly exaggerating the estimated FIVE HUNDRED people who perished in the widespread flooding in North Korea in 2016), hyphenated words occurring repeatedly in the middle of lines (because someone poorly formatted the text and so words with line break hyphens retain their hyphens even when they fall midline), unclear references (page 109 ... and this time the French fought with the British, as they too wanted great access to the lucrative Chinese market.” Does this mean the British and French were fighting one another’s armies or does it mean they fought together against the Chinese?), etc. Meanwhile, the author can’t keep track of her own travelling companions in North Korea. We are told at one point that she was accompanied by, inter alia, “a middle-aged Danish couple”. Several pages later she claims that “Mette, the only Dane said...”. It may sound niggling, but these inaccuracies and inconsistencies are ruining this book for me. Less than 100 pages in, I have no respect for the author or her translator and find myself wondering where on earth an editor disappeared to. But even more than all these annoyances I keep finding myself searching in vain for a point to any of the author’s travels and narrative. There’s no analysis, no insight, no realizations, nor conclusions. The book is one insufferable, dreadful, and dull travelogue. A nice addition to your travel literature book shelf.Ms. Fatland, a sensible but adventuresome Norwegian in her 30s, takes the chair-bound reader on a journey that circumnavigates Russia. Her story nicely mixes ancient history, current political events, and the personal stories of some of many people she meets on her hard travels. This is an enjoyable book, made all the more than suitable given the pandemic time of non-travel we are all now enduring.A delight of books such as these is the opportunity to acquire interesting random knowledge. For instance, the material on crossing the Black Sea help me understand for the first time its origins and importance.In the end, a reader comes away with a renewed appreciation for the physical size of the old Soviet Union and for the many human disruptions on its borderlands caused by czars and their heir Stalin. And, with Putin the border remains a pulsating one.
